Winter light can be incredible, soft, painterly and atmospheric. Sunset is at a reasonable time of day while you’re still sober ( or soberish 🤣 ) Everything isn’t just green!! One of the great things about the UK is our lush green countryside, in photographs though, this can look a little overpowering. In winter most trees don’t have their leaves, the shrubs and fields won’t be such a vivid green and the sky.. wow the sky…. a winter sky really does help to create beautiful scenes at this wonderful time of year.
One very sensible reason you shouldn’t overlook a winter wedding is the cost. Most venues and suppliers will have winter discounts. The cost of living is currently so ridiculously high, especially for young couples, one way to reduce the cost is to have a cosy winter wedding.
For photographers, you definitely need to brush up on your flash and off camera flash skills. Venues will certainly be darker in winter and having these skills will make you super confident to tackle any lighting problems you encounter. Make sure you talk through the timeline with your couples, making sure you have time for some natural light group shots and couple shots. I never feel I need a coat, but it isn’t a bad idea to have something warm with you.
My advice if you have booked, or are considering a winter wedding is to plan well, especially your timeline, take advantage of the early sunset and plan some nighttime images with your photographer. I currently have some HUGE discounts for winter dates.
The photos shown are from some recent winter weddings.
So brave the cold, plan well and save some money on a winter wedding, if you’re lucky you might even get snow on your wedding day!! ❄️❄️❄️
